Pre-Reading Activity/Question:

Have you ever participated in any kind of political campaign in your school or community? What did you like or dislike about the process? If you never participated in a campaign before, would you like to? Why or why not? Be specific in your response.
OR
Find five or six objects / props from the story and put them in a brown bag. Together with the students discuss the significance of each object in relation to the text . This activity offers an opportunity to recall the important events in the story. Suggestions for objects / props in the bag: campaign button, diner menu, a newspaper article about a corrupt politician, poetry book, a pamphlet from the American Cancer Society etc...

    • Article- Pretend you are a writer for the IS 93 Times. Write a report about the recent political controversy that has taken place in Mulhoney.
    • Advice- Create an advice column on which you advise Hope on how to deal with her feelings towards her mother and nonexistent father.
    • Interview-Pretend you are a newspaper reporter whose job is to interview one of the characters. Be sure the interview contains both questions and answers.
    • Cartoon- Summarize a conflict in the story through the use of a comic strip panel.
    • Advertisement- Create an advertisement for the Welcome Stairway. The message of the advertisment must be related to the comfort food you can find there.
